The challenge

Large lectures needed participation activities that could be reused by teaching teams and provide a meaningful attendance signal.

Existing environment

Canvas Commons and a lecture-based teaching model.

Requirements

  • Create twelve reusable activities
  • Make participation simple
  • Support engagement and attendance tracking
  • Allow teaching teams to adopt the activities

Solution architecture

Design decisions

01

Activities were kept short enough to fit the rhythm of a lecture.

02

Canvas Commons enabled reuse without rebuilding each activity.

03

Interaction evidence served both learning and attendance needs.

Experience design

Students encounter compact activities during lectures, while educators can reuse and adapt a consistent format.

Implementation

Twelve activities were designed, authored and packaged for distribution through Canvas Commons.

Outcome

Teaching teams gained a reusable activity set designed to increase active participation and support attendance tracking.

What I learned

Small interactions work best when they are designed as part of teaching flow, not as interruptions.
